x + y = 76

x = 4y - 9

4y - 9 + y = 76

5y = 65

y = 13

13 + x = 76

x = 63

Answer:

17 and 59

Explanation:

Given: Larger of two numbers is nine less than four times the smaller number. The sum of two numbers is 76.

To find: Both the numbers

Solution:

Let the smaller number be x and the larger number be y.

It is given that the sum of the numbers is 76.

So,
x+y=76

Also, the larger number is 9 less than 4 times the smaller number. So, we have
y=4x-9

On substituting
y=4x-9 in
x+y=76 we get

x+4x-9=76

5x-9=76

5x=76+9

5x=85

x=(85)/(5)

x=17

So, the smaller number is 17

larger number is
4(17)-9=59

Hence, the smaller number is 17 and the larger number is 59.
