You must add 2/3 and 1/4. You need a common denominator. The least common denominator of 3 and 4 is 12.

2/3 + 1/4 =

= 2/3 * 4/4 + 1/4 * 3/3

= 8/12 + 3/12

= 11/12

Answer: He used 11/12 of a cup of sugar.
