You can just simplify to make an equivalent equation:

(2)(3x + 8) = 5 6x + 16 = 5

∴ ㏒₂ (3x + 8) = ㏒₂ 2⁵

If the right side of the equation above is equal to the left side, then it is true to say that;

x = 24/3

= 8
