Fructose
An excess of fructose in sports drinks may leave the small intestine undigested and cause bloating and gas in the colon.
Fructose is a simple ketonic monosaccharide present naturally in fruits, honey and some vegetables. Fructose is absorbed directly into the blood during digestion. If the digestive system does not absorb fructose properly, it can result in abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating and gas. Excess fructose can also lead to health conditions that are associated with the metabolic syndrome such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease .
