Grace paid $45 for a sweater on sale at Sweater Village for 20% off the retail price. Sandra paid $42 for the same sweater at Winter Wonderland on sale for 25% off the retail price. How much more does the sweater cost at Sweater Village than at Winter Wonderland at the pre-sale price?

Let x be the pre-sale price of the sweater at Sweater village and y be the pre-sale price of the sweater at Winter Wonderland.

Discount at Sweater Village = 20%

=(20)/(100) x

=(x)/(5)

Cost after discount =
x-(x)/(5) =(4x)/(5)

(4x)/(5)=45

x=(5(45))/(4)

=
(225)/(4)

x = 56.25

Discount at Winter Wonderland = 25%

=(25)/(100) y

=(y)/(4)

Cost after discount =
y-(y)/(4)

=
(3y)/(4)

(3y)/(4)=42

y = 56

Difference in cost = 56.25 - 56 = 0.25

Hence, sweater at Sweater Village costs 0.25 more than at Winter Wonderland.
