Early on, ancient Egyptians mainly depended on agriculture and hunting to sustain themselves. Ancient Egyptians had no idea about long-distance trade. Initially, they used the Nile River only as a natural resource to help with agriculture. However, Egyptians later began using the river as a source of transportation. People used the Nile River to exchange ideas and goods with other communities. The development of trade brought prosperity across the land. Ancient Egyptians no longer had to depend on agriculture as their only means of livelihood.

The ancient Egyptian civilization settled next to the Nile River for the many benefits it provided. They were successful in predict the flooding of the river and adapt this situation to its benefit, knowing when to grow crops. But when they realized that the river could be used for transportation of people and goods, everything changed and their development was accelerated due to trade.
