Usually the price of minerals depends on it's rarity and it's distinguishing characteristics. Diamonds are rare, and are also the hardest, and rubies are rare and come in various bright red - ish/purpule - ish/pinkish colours. These minerals are called gemstones.

Answer : The value of things depends on the ratio between demand and supply. The most valuable minerals are those that are very appreciated and scarce. Diamonds and rubies are examples: there are few and they have a great value because there is a great demand.
