Why were railroads the catalyst for industrial and commercial growth in the u.s. in the late 1800s

rail roads were way to move goods and raw martial on mass. rails roads could move supply faster and over a longer distance than using wagons or boats witch were limited on were they can go. causing an industrial boom.

The massive construction of railroads boosts the coal, iron and steel industries of the United States. Further, land grants by the Government enhanced the pace of production.
