Hi,

Let's start out with, 4x-7x-21=-36

next we combine like terms, -3x-21=-36

then add 21 to both sides, -3x-21+21=-36+21

simplify, -3x=-15

divide both sides by -3, -3x/-3 = -15/-3

answer: x=5

Have a great day!

4x-7(x+3)=-36\ \ \ |\text{use distributive property}\\\\4x-(7)(x)-(7)(3)=-36\\\\4x-7x-21=-36\\\\-3x-21=-36\ \ \ \ |+21\\\\-3x=-15\ \ \ \ |:(-3)\\\\\boxed{x=5}
