Answer: choice B) 16.8

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Step-by-step explanation:

First add up all the numbers to get

257.75+235.85+299.15+250.5+266.75 = 1310

Then divide that result over 5 to find the average weight

1310/5 = 262

The averate weight is 262 lbs, which is the arithmetic mean. Let's make 'm' be the mean. So m = 262.

Next we subtract the mean m from each value

257.75 - m = 257.75 - 262 = -4.25

235.85 - m = 235.85 - 262 = -26.15

299.15 - m = 299.15 - 262 = 37.15

250.5 - m = 250.5 - 262 = -11.5

266.75 - m = 266.75 - 262 = 4.75

The results we got were: {-4.25, -26.15, 37.15, -11.5, 4.75}

If we take the absolute value of each number, we end up with this new set of values: {4.25, 26.15, 37.15, 11.5, 4.75}. Basically whatever was negative flips to positive. The positive values stay where they are.

The last thing to do is to add up that set of values and divide by 5 to find the average distance from the mean m

(4.25+26.15+37.15+11.5+4.75)/5 = 83.8/5 = 16.76

That value rounds to 16.8 if you round to one decimal place (to the nearest tenth). So this is why choice B is the correct answer.

1. Calculate the mean (add all the digits together and divide by how many there is)

257.75+235.85+299.10+250.50+266.75=1310.25 1310.25/5=262.05

2. Calculate the distance between each data point and the mean. (Take the mean and subtract it the weight)

257.75-262.05= 4.75

235.85-262.05= 26.2

299.15-262.05= 37.8

250.75-262.05= 11.3

266.75-262.05=4.7

3. Add all them together

4.75+26.2+37.8+11.3+4.7= 84.75 or 85. 8

Your answer is d
