With the norths superior infastructure it was far easier for northern Generals to rely their positions to commanders via telegraphs giving real time updates to other armies and in some cases Washington Dc. Communication helped the north know where the enemy was and what the appropriate response would be to counter their manuever. It gave President Lincoln the ability to coordinate with his Generals and Generalsthe ability to recieve battle updates from the Signal Corps who notified things like how much ammunition was available, how much food they had, did they fortify their positions, number of casualties and number of the enemy.
