We need to add or subtract these fractions

For b. the fractions have the same denominator, 5.

So all we need to do is to add together the numerator, 3 and 4.

b. 7/5

For a. and c. the denominators are not the same. So we need to find the least common denominator (LCD) or the smallest multiple.

For a, the denominators are 8 and 6. The smallest number would be 24, 8 *3 and 6*4. So we multiple 3/8 *3 and 1/6 *4 - multiplying it with the numerator and denominator. It will be 9/24 - 4/24 which equals 5/24.

a. 5/24

The same can be applied for c. so try it out! A hint will be the least common denominator would be 45. Multiply the fraction (numerator and denominator) by a number where the denominator will both be 45.

Just remember, we only can add or subtract fractions if they have like denominators. If not we have to multiple the fraction so they do.
