Any person who might have entered the meat processing plants in Chicago during the turn of the 19th century might have felt the cold it had recently been implemented in the plants to preserve the meat for much more time than up to that moment.

The humidity of the steam, recently incorporated as well, should have filled the air with humidy and turned it thicker, something that might have affected the breathing process for sure.
