In his old age, Hrothgar has proved a wise and effective king. He built Heorot, a grand hall, and builds love and loyalty through his generosity and wisdom. However, even though he was once a great warrior, now he can no longer defend his people from Grendel's attacks. Grendel’s attacks alter people's perception of Hrothgar because now they can see he is wise but not strong any more. And thus he will need Beowulf's help to be able to defeat Grendel and, later, his mother.
