What are the differences between the metric and English systems of measurement?

Most countries use the Metric System, which uses the measuring units such as meters and grams and adds prefixes like kilo, milli and centi to count orders of magnitude. In the United States, we use the older Imperial system, where things are measured in feet, inches and pounds

All of the metric systems of measurement are base 10. What this means is that for every 10 of something, you get the next level of that. For instance, 10mm = 1cm.

What the United States uses for their measurement has random bases. For instance, 12 inches = 1 foot.
