Why wasn't there a great need or desire for books during the middle ages?

During the Middle Ages plague swept across Europe and the world killing millions of people, to seek protection from the diseases people turned to god. Making religion more important then education

During the 5th and 15th centuries, until the beginning of the Renaissance, medieval society was rural and self-reliant, which was based on the feudal system. People did not have access to regular education, only Church members and nobles could read. Knowing the situation of the population, Church members wrote texts and books that were restricted to members of the clergy and members of the nobility. Therefore, religion was the main of the restricted literature in the Middle Ages.
