I will call the total cost of the ride by the letter
c, and the number of miles (acording to the problem) is
m.

For each mile 0.5 cents are charged, so if m miles are traveled,
0.5*m will be charged for those miles.

Then the total cost of the taxi ride is


c=5+0.5*m

the 5 in the equation is because the taxi ride is 5 dollars initially, and then the 0.5*m is the cost for the miles traveled.
