Way did thomas jefferson not attend the constitutional convention in 1787?

So Jefferson really loved France, (like to the point I’m not sure why he even moved back to Virginia besides to found UVA) but
He was in Paris, Leading after Benjamin Franklin as the trade minister. He returned to the US in 1789 to become Washington's Secretary of State alongside Alexander Hammy as Secretary Treasurer.
