Lightning rods are mounted on top of tall structures to protect them during thunderstorms. If lightning strikes, it will hit the rod and be directed to the ground through a wire, instead of passing through the structure. What type of substance should be used to make a lightning rod, and why?

Answer:

Conductor

Step-by-step explanation:

A conductor should be used to make the lightning rod so that it can conduct the electricity to the ground. A lightning rod is placed at the top of tall buildings to protect it from damage due to strike of lightning. In order to pass the high voltage current to the ground instead of the building, a low resistance path known as lightning rod is placed.

The concept of lighting rod was originally developed by Ben-Franklin many people believe that lighting rods attract lighting. It is better to stated to say that lighting rods provides a low resistance path to ground that can be used to conduct the enormous electrical currents when lighting strikes occurs.
