The use of the contrapasso in Dante's inferno is used to describe the reciprocity of the punishment of souls according to the sin committed. A description to this term can be found in Inferno, Canto XX which refers to the punishments to astrologers, oracles and false prophets where their heads twisted backwards as a symbolic punishment for they false pretensions they're forced to walk backwards so they cannot see what's ahead of them.
