Hypotonic describes the concentration of salt. Hypotonic is typically when a concentration has a higher solute concentration or salt and less of a water concentration.

Hypertonic is the opposite with a higher concentration of water and a lesser concentration of solute or salt.

Hyper and hypotonic are words used to compare the solute concentration of two solution. Example: distilled water is hypotonic to seawater. This is because the seawater has a high concentration of dissolved salts. In contrast, seawater is hypertonic to distilled water
