Remark

The first thing you have to do is find out where the x intercept of the given equation is. Then you have to try them all to see where their x intercept is.

Step 1

Find the x intercept of the given equation. The point you want is (x1,0) which is obtained by letting y = 0

y = 2x - 5

0 = 2x - 5 Add 5 to both sides.

5 = 2x Divide by 2

5/2 = x

x = 2.5

Step Two

Find the line equation that has (2.5,0) as it's intercept. There is no quick way to do this.

A

0 = (1/2)x + 10 Subtract 10 from both sides.

-10 = (1/2)x

You don't have to go any further. You are getting a negative result for x.

A is not the answer.

B

0 = (1/3) x + 10/3 Subtract 10/3 from both sides.

-10/3 = (1/3) x And again, you are getting something negative. B is not the answer

C

0 = (-2/3)x + 5 Subtract 5 from both sides.

- 5 = -(2/3)x Multiply by - 3/2 on both sides

-5*-3/2 = x

x = 15/2

x = 7.5 and this turns out to be wrong.

D

0 = (-2/3) x + 5/3 Subtract 5/3 from both sides

- 5/3 = (-2/3) x Multiply both sides by 3

-5 = - 2x Divide by - 2

-5/-2 = -2x/-2

2.5 = x
