If his correct answer is -10x+5y, and what he had before was ax+6y-11x+y. Then you have to look at ax and -11x only.

Meaning:

-10x=ax-11x *what minus 11 is equaled to -10?*

-10x=-21x-11x *-21 minus 11 gives you -10*

So, a=-21

(ax + 6y) - (11x + y) = -10x + 5y

ax +6y - 11x - y = -10x + 5y

(ax - 11x) + (6y - y) = -10x + 5y

Set the x's equal to the x's and the y's equal to the y's

ax - 11x = -10x 6y - y = 5y

ax = 11x -10x 5y = 5y

ax = x 5 = 5

a = 1 TRUE (TRUE statement for "y" just means infinite sol'ns)

Answer: a = 1
