Why do astrobiologist look for water and not oxygen when they search for life on other planets?

Well life needs Hydrogen, Carbon, and Oxygen to form. If there is water on the Planet then you already know there is Hydrogen and Oxygen as that's what it's made out of. So I'd say Carbon. Not sure if this is the answer to your specific question though.

Also this is middle school biology? Biology has gotten a lot harder since when I was in middle school. Talking about Astrobiology lol.

Because if there is no oxygen. it does not mean the planet is starile
