The correct answer is signaled a compromise on Germany.

During peace negotiations, British prime minister David Lloyd George represented a middle ground. The United States government wanted to be lenient towards Germany. However, the French wanted to severely punish Germany for World War I considering how much infrastructure damage that was done to France.

George fell somewhere in between. He wanted to punish Germany for their actions during World War I. At the same time, he wanted to ensure that the German economy would not crash, as he wanted Britian to still be able to trade with Germany after the Treaty of Versailles.
