There are 1000 mm in a meter.

1 meter = 1000 mm

x m = 254 mm

Cross multiply

x * 1000 mm = 1 m * 254 mm Divide by 1000

\dtext{x = } (1*meter * 254 mm)/(1000 mm)

Notice the mm cancel out on the left. You are left with meters

x = 0.254 m
