The second side of a triangle is 3 more than the first side. the third side is 10 less than 3 times the first side. if the perimeter is 23 cm, find the length of the shortest side.

Solution: Find the relationship among the 3 sides and solve for the unknown.

First side = x

second side = x + 3

third side = 3x - 10

x + x + 3 + 3x - 10 = 23

5x - 7 = 23

5x = 30

x = 6 <========== shortest side
