Isaiah is 10 years younger than his sister. The sum of their ages is no more than 34 years. Write an inequality that can be used to represent this situation in the box, where x represents Isaiah’s sister's age.

x - Isaiah’s sister's age.

(x - 10) - Isaiah’s age.

The sum of their ages is

x + (x-10)= 2x - 10

The sum of their ages is no more than 34 years:

2x - 10 ≤ 34.

Or we can simplify this inequality,

x - 5 ≤ 17.

Answer:

Isaiah's Sister age < = 22 (x <= 22)

Explanation:

Topic: Inequalities

You have to be able to build two unkown system equations, so let's call

I = Isaiah's Age

x = Isaiah's Sister's Age

you know that Isaiah is 10 years younger than ger sister

so you have that

I = x -10

and also you know that the sum of their ages don't exceed 34

I + x <= 34

with this information you can use substitution to find out the inequality for Isaiah's Sister's age as it follows

I + x <= 34 replacing I = x - 10 we have that

x - 10 + x <= 34 and then

2x - 10 <= 34 finding x then we have that

2x <= 34 + 10 so

2x <= 44 and we find that x <= 22

so by doing this we found that Isaiah's Sister cannot be older than 22, try doing the same for Isaiah!
