Elodea is a fresh water aquatic plant commonly used in aquarium vegetation. Elodea leaf cell is a typical plant cell that contains a nucleus, cytoplasm, a rigid cell wall (which provides shape for the cell), a thin cell membrane, many green chloroplasts (which helps the cell to produce its own food by photosynthesis), and the central vacuole.
Certain factors such as the age of the leaves and the presence of any plant growth stimulants determine the number of chloroplasts that are present in each elodea cell. Young elodea leaves have average number of 25 chloroplasts per cell while mature elodia leaves can have average number of 35 chloroplasts per cell.
