For this case we have the following variables:

f: The amount of fabric in yards

n: The number of shirts

The equation modeling the problem is given by:

f = (3)/(4)n

For 12 yards of fabric we have:

12 = (3)/(4)n

From here, we clear the value of n.

We have then:

n = (4)/(3)12

n = 16

Answer:

16 shirts were sewn
