Bartolome de Las Casas (1484-1566) was a Spanish colonist, historian and social reformer who later became Dominican friar. His brave stand against the horrors of the conquest and the colonization of the New World earned him the title “Defender" of the Native Americans of the Caribbean. For him, Indians were more religious than the Greeks because they offered more sacrifice. They also had better educational system for their children and their marriage laws were more natural. He also proclaimed that Indian women were more devoted to labor than Christian matrons.
