His New York Journal was famous for reporting and publishing more than news. In the late 1800s, it was characterized for having exaggerated and dishonest stories, sensational reporting, and for using shocking headlines that caught people's eyes. This later became known as "yellow journalism".
The reach of the newspaper reportage was such that it's even blamed for making believe that Spain had exploded the ship, USS Maine, when was no real evidence of that and contributed to the Spanish-American War (1898).
