A temporary magnet allows the user to determine when it is magnetic and when it isn't.

That's very useful if, for example, you want to pick up a bunch of small iron objects (such as nails or junked cars), move them over to somewhere else, and then DROP them. This is easy to do if you have a magnet that you can turn on and turn off.
