Oceanside bike rental shop charges 17 dollars plus 9 dollars an hours for renting a bike. Tom paid 53 dollars to rent a bike. How many hours did he pay to have the bike checked out?

17+9+9+9+9=53

Tom had the bike for four hours.

Let's represent the numbers of hours the bike is rented by
h. This means that the amount of money paid to rent a bike for
h hours is
17 + 9h.


We can figure out how many hours Tom rented the bike by creating an equation based off the expression we just found. Since we can say that that expression is how much a person would pay to rent the bike for
h hours, we can formulate an equation:


17 + 9h = 53


9h = 36


h = 4


Tom rode the bike for 4 hours.
