I believe the answer is: Hypothesis

Hypothesis refers to the initial explanation that researchers have to explain a certain occurrence before conducting the research. Since the data to make a hypothesis tend to be limited, it has a really high chance to be wrong. The research itself would be done in order to proof whether the initial hypothesis is wrong or correct.
