Estimate the width and height in centimeters of a half-gallon milk

solution:

The volume of the milk container will be S x S x H or S^2H (V = l x w x h)

One gallon of milk is 3.8L; we can assume milk is similar to water in its properties.

One half gallon of milk would be 1.9L or 1900ml. 1900ml also is 1900cc (remember it is water..)

So S²H= 1900cc

If you look at a milk carton, the bottom would measure about 3 inches x 3 inches.

3 inches = 3 x 2.54cm = 7.62cm and this would be S

so...(7.62cm)²H = 1900cm³ cc = cubic centimeters or cm³

so now we can solve for H = 1900cm³/58.06cm²

H = 32.7cm or ~ 33cm high.
