A microelectrode is recording the activity from a single cell in the visual cortex of a cat. the cell begins to fire rapidly when a vertical line sweeps across the visual field to the left, but stops firing when the same line sweeps back across the visual field to the right. in this case, the microelectrode is most likely monitoring activity from

A microelectrode is most likely monitoring a complex cell.

A microelectrode refers to an electrode of very small size, used in electrophysiology for either electrical stimulation of nervous tissue, or for the recording of the neural signals. In the beginning, pulled glass pipette microelectrode was used with afterward introduction of insulated metal wires.
