Women played a large role in their government and were major leaders of the decision-making in their tribe in the Huron Society. Historian James Axtell calls Huron society a “gynecocracy,” or a government ruled by women. They came up with a petition to fight against the relocating of their tribe to a different land. Their power was real, they have the chief authority amongst all the nations of the Huron language. Huron nation is more pleased with the birth of a girl than that of a boy, as they believe she will guarantee the future of the people by bearing children.
