So if the ratio is 4:5, we know that this total amount of marbles must first be split into 9 equal parts:


(63)/(9)=7

Now we know that each 'part' is going to be equal to 7 marbles.

So then in the ratio, we are simply going to multiply each side by 7:


4:5=28:35

Therefore, since John had the part of '5' in the ratio, the amount of marbles that John got was 35.
