A teacher asked her class of 32 students how they got to school that morning. Twice as many students said they rode the bus as were car riders, and five times as many students were car riders as were walkers. How many students were in each category?

Bus riders: 2c

Car riders: c

Walkers: 1/5c

Bus + Car + Walkers = Total

2c + c + 1/5c = 32

3
(1)/(5)c = 32

(16)/(5)c = 32

c = 32 (
(5)/(16)

c = 10

Bus: 2c = 2(10) = 20

Walkers:
(1)/(5)c =
(1)/(5)(10) = 2

Answer: Bus riders=20, Car riders=10, Walkers=2
