ok so first u distribute -3 to the (x+5).
which would get you -3x-15=12.
than you add 15 to both sides, so 12+15= 27.
so know we have -3x=27.
than you divide -3 to both side, so you get 27÷-3=-9, which makes x=-9

- 3x - 3(5) = 12

- 3x - 15 = 12

- 3x = 12 + 15

- 3x = 27

x = - 9
