we simply divide the 3/4 by the 8 students.

\bf \cfrac{3}{4}/ 8\implies \cfrac{3}{4}/ \cfrac{8}{1}\implies \cfrac{3}{4}\cdot \cfrac{1}{8}\implies \cfrac{3}{32}

each student gets 1/8 of the cake.

we multiply 1/8 and 3/4. To do that we multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. This gives (1*3)/(8*4) =3/32 of the cake
