2/3x - 5/8x = 26

Make 2/3 and 5/8 have common denominators in order to subtract the two fractions.

The least common denominator of the two fractions is 24. Multiply 2/3 by 8/8 and multiply 5/8 by 3/3.

  • 2/3 * 8/8 = 16/24
  • 5/8 * 3/3 = 15/24

Rewrite the equation using the fractions with common denominators.

16/24x - 15/24x = 26

Subtract the numerators straight across and keep the same denominator. You are left with:

1/24x = 26

Divide both sides by 1/24.

x = 624

x=624. You can check if it is true by substituting x as 624. You will get 26
