So you have to try to get the variable alone. So you add 5 to both sides ( inverse operations). Now the equation is 3x<9. Then to isolate x. You divide both sides by 3. So your answer is x<3

*Treat the inequality sign as an equal sign.

Firstly, add 5 on both sides of the equation:
3x<9

Next, divide both sides by 3 and your inequality is
x<3
