How did the geography of the new world frustrate early European explorers in their attempts to find a new trade route to east asia? (New world was America)

They thought that they had found a new route to Asia, but in reality they found a route to an unexplored land called America. They wanted to have a new trade route to Asia, so naturally, when Columbus told them he found a new territory, they were disappointed and extremely frustrated with him and his discoveries.
