Firstly, write out the numbers first.

assume \: x \: is \: the \: number \\ ( (1)/(3) x \: ) - 6 = 8 \\ bring \: over \: - 6\\ ( (1)/(3) x \: ) = 8 + 6 \: \\ \: \: (1)/(3) x \: = 14 \\ \: \: \:x = 14 * 3 \\ \: \: \: \: \: \: \: = 42
Double check answers

( (1)/(3) x \: ) - 6 = 8 \\ \\ ( (1)/(3) (42 \: ) - 6 \\ = 14 - 6 \\ = 8

The number is 42.
