Show your work by multiplying 1/2 by 5/5 and 4/5 by 2/2 to make both fractions have common denominators.

  1. 1/2 * 5/5 = 5/10
  2. 4/5 * 2/2 = 8/10

5/10 + 8/10 = 13/10

13/10 as a mixed number is 1 3/10.

When adding fractions, it's best to have common denominators. To find a common denominator, you can just multiply the denominators. The two denominators are 2 and 5.

Multiply:

2 * 5 = 10

Change both fractions so that 10 is the denominator:

(1 * 5)/(2 * 5) = (5)/(10)

(4 * 2)/(5 * 2) = (8)/(10)

Now add the fractions:

(5)/(10) + (8)/(10) = (13)/(10) = 1 (3)/(10)

Your answer is 1
(3)/(10)
