The virus would first have to replicate before it would kill the cell because the point of a virus is to replicate and survive in a host. So once the herpes virus injects it’s DNA into the cell, the virus tricks the cell to make that DNA. In the end the cell makes the viral DNA and the cell dies do to over replication of the viral DNA
