Let the two numbers be x and y
x^2 + y^2 = 145
x + y = 17 Solve for y
y = 17 - x
x^2 + (17 - x)^2 = 145
x^2 + 289 - 34x + x^2 = 145
2x^2 - 34x + 289 = 145 Subtract 145 from both sides.
2x^2 -34x + 289 - 145 = 0
2x^2 - 34x + 144 = 0
x^2 - 17x + 72 = 0
(x - 9)(x - 8) = 0
x = 9 or x = 8
y = 9 or y = 8
The larger number is 9
