Joseph Smith abandons Ohio to avoid arrest following failure of his Mormon bank in the Panic of 1837 and heads for Missouri to rebuild his religious community. Joseph Smith was the founder of the Mormon church and after his move he would eventually be murdered by an anti-Mormon mob in 1844.

Why do you think some people in the United States might have seen Smith as a threat?
